We have been using Sightmax for a long time now and our naming convention for operators is first name, last initial. So for example if an employee was John Smith, the operator name would be John S. We do not want to expose the last name immediately before speaking to people.
Now we have two people here with the same first name and last initial, so it's a bit of a problem.
Can anyone share suggestions on the naming conventions they use?

We use the same name convention as you do. When we ran into the duplicate situation, we just dropped the last name initial from one of them.
May not be the best solution, but it was better than adding a 2.
